Default Cysts and periods

I have been on Insulite for over a week now and I am very pleased with my results so far. I do have a few things that I was worried about, but they started way before I satrted taking insulite.

When I first found out I had PCOS I went to a doctor to discuss the problems I was having and one thing I mentioned was pain that felt like sharp gas pains. The doctor told me it was the cysts on my ovaries bursting. This pain came off and on for about a year and then all of a sudden I stopped having mentral cycles completely. My mensus cycle came back last march and when it does arrive, it lasts for almost a month at a time. The pain is back too. I have also noticed that my flow is extremely heavy and I am having blood clots that are very large. There are a lot of them as well.

My concerns are: Is there anything I can take to prevent the pain from destroying my daily routines? Is an extremely heavy flow normal for women with PCOS? Should I be concerned about the blood clots? Do you think the pain will decrease once my body goes back to a normal cycle and I get use to the insulite?

Any information would be helpful and appreciated.

Thank you for your time!

Dear Ashley,

Thank you for contacting the PCOS Forum. I'm excited to hear that you have recently started the System!

Women with PCOS can have various menses patterns, including heavy periods with clotting. Uterine fibroids can also cause heavy menses and can be ruled out with a pelvic ultrasound. In addition, losing an abundance of blood can lead to low iron levels and iron deficiency anemia. You may want to have your iron level checked along with ferritin, which is a measure of stored iron.

The supplements in the system have botanicals that help to balance out the hormones. Some of these botanicals are phytoestrogens which act as weaker estrogens than what your body is producing. The weaker estrogens will competitively bind to your estrogen receptors in your body and will help reduce the heavy menses and clotting that stronger estrogens can be responsible. Also there is milk thistle in the product, which helps the liver process hormones more efficiently so the stronger estrogens will have less effect in the body. This does take time though. You may not notice a difference for the first few months of your cycles. This being said, I do think your pain should improve.

Some nice home remedies to alleviate cramping include using a heating pad on your abdomen, pelvic area, or back (wherever the cramping is worst). Also, you can use a "castor oil pack" on the painful area. This involves soaking a piece of flannel or cotton in castor oil, placing it directly on the skin over the affected area, cover it with another cloth, and put a heating pad on top of that. This is a nice gentle way to reduce inflammation, and works well for some people. Leave on the castor oil pack for up to an hour and you can do this every day if you want, while the pain lasts.

Some people are helped by taking a calcium-magnesium supplement, too.

I look forward to hearing back from you, Ashley. Please write in again with any additional questions or concerns.
