    Question Some diet questions??

    Hello,
My name is Heather. I am 37 and new here. I have been on the insulite system for about 6 months and BOY what a difference! I actually ovulated for the past 2 months and that is the first time in 3 years! I was skeptical at first, but I am a believer now, even though my doctors don't approve.
    Anyway, my diet questions are:
I have been reading mixed things about soy? Some research says it will help lower estrogen in women who have high levels? How is this possible since soy is supposed to contain isoflavones which are estrogen based? However, some research says to avoid it...I am confused.
My other question is coconut. I am allergic to dairy, and was under the impression I wasn't supposed to use soy, but in some things I can't stand almond or rice. I started using coconut milk, butter, yogurt etc. I read in a few places that coconut is high in saturated fat and that with PCOS one should avoid saturated fats because it can exacerbate symtpoms. However, my naturepath says that coconut it a plant based saturated fat and in moderation is a much healther choice.
    Thanks!
    Heather G.

    Hello Heather,

Thank you for writing in! I am glad that you are feeling good with the use of the PCOS System.

Because soy is a phytoestrogen, a plant estrogen, it has a similar structure to the estrogen our body produces. It can bind to the estrogen receptors but because it is significantly weaker than the estrogen our body produces, it can decrease the effect that our own estrogen has. What is also interesting is that it can also enhance estrogen for those that have really low levels as it exerts an estrogen effect when it binds to the receptors when there is not enough estrogen in the body made. Does this make sense?

When it comes to using soy products, I would be sure that you use them in moderation and use only organic soy. The reason is that if it is non-organic it is likely genetically modified. Also, much of the soy products are highly processed and you are much better off using non-processed whole foods.

With regard to soy and PCOS, I am not sure that you would see a huge difference as the hormone changes are often a result of insulin resistance.

You can use coconut products. The fats in coconut are actually helpful in many ways. It is a rich source of medium chain triglycerides that are used for energy and not readily stored as fat. Also, the component laurie acid is an anti-viral. So, there are benefits to the this high saturated fat food. I often recommend using this to my patients. However, if you are using the milks, yogurts, etc., just be sure you are using the non-sweetened versions as the others can add a lot more in terms of carbohydrates.

I do feel that this is a better option than many of the other fats, especially animal fats, that can make inflammation worse with conditions like insulin resistance. Plant based fats will often provide benefits. Of course olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds are great options.

Please let me know if this helps or I can help further.

For a year (and a bit more), my mother and I have been following my 60 carb-a-day diet with veggies and lost over 100 lbs succesfully. However, when you're a teen and you're going to sleepovers and to camp, what would you recommend to snack on? You've got people offering you cake, chips, and candy (even when they know your story). You just want to take it, but you look down and say "There has to be another alternative! Don't do it!" After two years, protein bars bore me and I get bored from some foods over time. What are some low-carb and TASTY snacks to have on the go? Please don't recommend anything with whey protein...gross. :X

You can use alcohol in moderation. Moderation generally means less than 2 drinks per day. However, your alcohol beverage also counts towards your carb intake. In general, a typical 12 oz can of beer contains 6-22 grams of carbs/serving, while a 6 oz serving of wine contains 2-10 grams of carbs/serving. Ideally you should consume protein or healthy fats along with your alcoholic beverage. In addition, I would avoid mixed and frozen drinks, such as margaritas and daquiris that can contain up to 48 grams of carbs/serving!

    I hope that this helps.

    Hi James,

Well actually your solution is in your question. You mentioned that when you eat a healthier diet, more vegetables and fruits, your weight decreases and when you eat poorly (fast foods), you gain. The goal for permanent weight loss is to eat more healthy foods, consistently. This is what will help to manage weight in your case. Fast foods are high in calories, high in carbs, low in nutrients. They do not provide you with healthy nutrition.

    Hope that this helps.
