Walking for Better Posture

September 17th, 2009

The great thing about walking regularly is that it doesn’t just help you lose weight and keep your heart healthy – it can have multiple other benefits, including better sleep patterns and better posture to improve the well being of those of us with PCOS.

One technique for better posture, which eases pressure on the spine and loosens tight muscles, is to shorten your stride. This can also help prevent wear and tear on the knee joint. If you overstride, your leg muscles have to work too hard and the knee can be forced into hyperextension, which can degrade the joint over time.

Shortening your stride also brings better alignment in the pelvis, spine and rib cage, allowing your skeleton to support your body more efficiently.

Smaller steps also help the body to unwind from stress. Try to make walking feel like your body is gliding rather than being dragged.
