LDL (Low-density lipoprotein)
Lipoproteins are combinations of lipids (fats) and proteins and
are the form in which lipids are transported in the blood.
LH (Lutenizing hormone)
One of several hormones produced in the anterior pituitary; in
females associated with follicular maturation, onset of heat (or
estrus) and egg release from the follicle. In males, it
stimulates testosterone release from the testes.
Libido
Sex drive.
Lipid Profile
A group of tests often ordered to determine risk of coronary
heart disease that includes total cholesterol, HDL and LDL
cholesterol, triglyceride levels and lipid ratios.
Lupron (leuprolide acetate)
A pharmaceutical treatment which initially stimulates
gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH produced in the
hypothalamus) and with continuous therapeutic use acts to
suppress sex steroid production in both the ovary and testes.
Used in the treatment of precocious puberty in children.
Luteal phase
The second half of the menstrual cycle; the time between
ovulation and onset of the next menses during which the corpus
luteum develops and begins to secrete progesterone and estrogen
and degenerates after 2 weeks in the absence of fertilization.
